An established conservative Democrat who represents heavily Republican Spartanburg County, State Senator Glenn Reese has always been a thorn in the side of local and state Republicans here in South Carolina.
In 2008, Senator Reese was challenged by Republican Mike Gardner. A strong supporter of our public schools, Senator Reese was not only attacked by his opponent but also by special interest groups that were closely tied to allies of legislation that would have brought a system of school vouchers to South Carolina. For this campaign, Reese hired CR+S to handle his direct mail, phones and overall strategy.
Reese weathered the attacks and came out on top on Election Day, capturing less than 60 percent of the votes and winning re-election.
We also helped Senator Reese four years earlier in 2004, when he was challenged by Steve Parker, who served on County Council at that time. In that election, he was again attacked by state Republicans and even Governor Mark Sanford heavily campaigned for Parker. Their efforts were not strong enough and Reese won that election with at least 56 percent. In that election cycle, not only did he win handily, but he also out-performed national Democrats who lost in his district.
