This open Statehouse seat when Harry Stille, a former Democrat-turned-Republican, announced he was stepping down. The seat attracted a strong Republican, Sammy Lewis, and two Democrats, one who was the 2002 Democratic nominee.
In the Democratic Primary, our client, Paul Agnew, faced off against Johnnie Waller, the 2002 nominee for this seat and the mayor of Calhoun Falls. After hiring CRS to target the likely Democratic Primary voters with a sophisticated phone program, Agnew became an extremely strong candidate heading into the general election as he soundly defeated Waller.
Leading up to the general election, CRS helped the Agnew campaign develop its strategy and target the right base of voters. Facing a credible challenge with a strong support among Republicans in his opponent, Sammy Lewis, Agnew worked incredibly hard connecting with individual voters. Like the primary, CRS assisted the Agnew campaign with another sophisticated phones program that left no stone unturned.
The results proved victorious as Agnew went on to win Election Night by a 53-47 margin. The win was also one of the few bright spots for Democrats across South Carolina in 2004 as it contributed to the net pick up of one seat in the House of Representatives.
