When J.T. Stites retired from his seat in Oklahoma State House District #2 in 2002, two Democrats jumped in the race to succeed him. The 2002 state Democratic Primary pitted Glen Bud Smithson against Dana Stites.

Using his background as a retired Oklahoma State Trooper, Smithson erased any inherent advantage that Stites held over him to make this a hot and competitive race to watch in 2002. Building upon the large turnout that occurs in this district around Sallisaw in Democratic Primaries, Smithson was able to deliver his message to a wider base of voters.

Supporters of Smithson hired CR+S to conduct a comprehensive phone ID and GOTV program to increase the turnout and build up enough support to slingshot Smithson past Stites. On Election night, Smithson earned 68.1 percent of vote (4143 votes) and crushed the campaign of Dana Stites who earned 31.9 percent of the vote (1943 votes).
